Over the past five months in Chicago, this proposition has become increasingly present in my work. Working between the architectural floor and the painted ground, I understand the floor as an architectural skin—a surface that bears contact while concealing the structures and labor beneath it. Reassembling the fragments sharpened my interest in distinguishing ground from floor. Their collisions brought tectonic plates to mind: ground continually shifting beneath a floor we construct to feel fixed. The dinner brought the paintings into conversation with food and the work of the SkyWAY youth chefs, gathering people around a shared table. Thank you to SkyART and the youth chefs for welcoming my work into that exchange. In the Studio: Fragments and the Underside With most of my materials still in New Haven, I worked with what I had in Chicago. Offcuts returned as material, and I began turning the vinyl over, using its underside as a surface for painting. I’m thrilled to be working with oil again. Oil washes absorbed into the backing while the front resisted them. In this work, that expectation took another form. LORE became the company that came. LORE is EROL reversed: accumulated memory of the ground made visible through the body. LORE is the floor that emerges from what destruction leaves behind—the swept piles of dust, discarded fragments, and detritus scattered across the floor. In Becoming LORE, that relationship of control shifted. I became the floor, entrusting my body to the support I had constructed. From the surface I had worked over and the remnants gathered upon it, LORE took form. I look forward to exploring how LORE continues to take form. fire set the oak floor of the living room of my grandparents’ home ablaze and in the process of cleaning, I discovered several layers of various linoleum flooring hidden beneath a wood floor. Which is odd. Typically Vinyl and Linoleum is adhered to the top of the subfloor not underneath it.
